How to Get a VAT Tax Refund in France

Traveling is fun, but you know what's even more fun? Getting some of your money back! If you're shopping in France, you can get a VAT (Value Added Tax) refund on your luxury purchases! In France, you will be able to claim 12% of the purchased items from your favorite handbags shop!

Here’s a quick guide to help you navigate the process.

1. Shop with your passport

First things first, make sure the shops you're buying from offer VAT refunds. Not all retailers do, but all major luxury brands doL Louis Vuitton, Celine, Hermes, Gucci, etcc...

Just in case, it’s a good idea to ask before you go wild with your credit card 💳 .

The shop assistant will take a VAT refund form. They’ll need your passport to fill it out for you.

IMPORTANT: During this step, if you want to save your money, mention to them that you'd like the refund back to your card and not in cash. Why? If you choose refunds in cash, you'll have to head to a special counter in the airport, and this for less refund (around 10% instead of 12%). It usually does not worth the hassle because it takes more time, for less money.

Then keep this VAT refund with you, you'll need it at the airport.

2. Before heading back to the Airport

After all your shopping, I know it’s tempting, but you shouldn’t use your new bags in France. They should stay in their original packaging, or at least, try to make it look like they are ;)

When you pack up, try to put all the goods that you bought in France with tax refunds within easy reach. This way, it will be easy if customs ask to see the goods. Also, make sure you have your VAT refund forms ready.

The tax refund area can be really crowded, and you should expect some lines, especially if you are flying back at peak hours. I recommend planning at least 3 hours (or even 4 hours to stay safe) before your flight to ensure you have enough time to complete your detax.

3. At the airport

At the airport, look for the “Detaxe” area (that’s French for VAT refund section).

At the Detaxe area, you’ll find some machines to scan your forms. If you get a green screen, you’re good to go! It’s like getting a thumbs-up from the airport gods.

If you get a red screen, don’t panic – this just means you need to see customs. Customs officers usually show up around 6:30 am, and they’ll need to see your passport, boarding pass, and possibly one of your (unused 😉 ) purchased items.

4. Get That Refund

Once customs approves your forms, you're all set. Some travelers report getting their refunds by the time they land back home, while others may need to wait a few weeks. Be patient.

If ever you don't receive any refund within 3 months, contact the tax refund provider on your VAT receipts.

Exiting France by driving?

If you're traveling by road, note that not all road crossings have a customs office. Major highways often do, but their hours might be more limited than those at airports. Plan your route and check the customs office hours in advance. It’s like planning a road trip with pit stops – only this time, one of the stops gives you money back!

Happy luxury shopping 👝 !
